What a Vulnerable Sector Check is
A Vulnerable Sector Check (sometimes called a Level 3 check) is a more detailed check intended for people applying to work or volunteer in positions of trust or authority with children or other vulnerable persons. It can include information that is not part of a Level 1 or Level 2 check.
Who usually needs one
Organizations commonly request a Vulnerable Sector Check for roles that involve, for example:
- Working or volunteering with children or youth
- Caring for older adults or persons with disabilities
- Some health care, education and community service positions
Where to get one
Vulnerable Sector Checks are processed through your local police service where you live. Requirements, such as in-person steps or the need for a letter from the requesting organization, vary by police service. Check your local police service's website for its current process.
We do not offer Vulnerable Sector Checks. A Criminal Record Check (Level 1) or a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (Level 2) is not a substitute for a Vulnerable Sector Check and will not be sufficient for positions that require one.
Before you apply anywhere
- Ask the organization in writing which check it requires.
- If you are unsure whether a role is considered to involve vulnerable persons, ask the organization, not the check provider.
- Allow extra time: Vulnerable Sector Checks can take longer and may require fingerprints.
