How an online criminal record check works

Step 1

Start your application

Create an account with your email address and choose your check: a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC, Level 2) or a Criminal Record Check (Level 1).

• Works on a phone, tablet or computer.
• Before you continue, confirm with your employer or requesting organization which check they need.
• You can save your progress and return later.

Step 2

Provide your details and consent

Enter the information the screening provider needs to run a name-based check, then review and give your consent.

• Full legal name, any previous names, date of birth, contact details and current address.
• The purpose of the check and, if applicable, the requesting organization.
• We do not ask for your Social Insurance Number.
• You review and sign the consent electronically. You can edit your details any time before payment.

Step 3

Complete payment and identity verification

Pay the fee plus applicable taxes, then verify your identity with our screening provider through its secure process.

• Taxes are calculated at checkout and the total is shown before you pay.
• Verification methods are offered by the provider and may include photographing a valid government-issued photo ID.
• Never email copies of your ID to us. Verification happens only inside the provider's secure flow.
• If verification cannot be completed, your account will show the available next step.

Step 4

Receive your results securely

When your result is ready we send you an email notification. You sign in to your secure account to view it.

• Results are never sent by email.
• Your result is not shared with any employer or organization unless you authorize it after viewing your result, or where disclosure is required by law.
• You can track your application's status at any time.

Our estimated processing time is about 15 minutes after successful identity verification for many checks. Some checks take longer, for example when additional review is needed, when a possible match requires fingerprint verification, or when there are delays at the provider.
