About the service
What is a criminal record check?
A criminal record check is a search for criminal convictions associated with your name and date of birth. Organizations often ask for one as part of hiring, contracting or other screening.
We offer two checks online: a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC, Level 2), our main check, and a Criminal Record Check (Level 1). Both are name-based checks and neither is a Vulnerable Sector Check.
Is your service operated by the government?
No. Ontario Criminal Record Check is a private online service. We are not a government department, police service or the RCMP, and we are not affiliated with or endorsed by any government.
Who conducts the underlying screening?
The underlying screening is conducted by our screening provider, Triton Canada, under our agreement with them. We manage your application, payment, support and secure delivery of your result.
Ordering and pricing
What type of check am I ordering?
You choose your check in the first step of the application: a Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC, Level 2) or a Criminal Record Check (Level 1).
A CRJMC includes everything in a Level 1 check plus outstanding charges and warrants, judicial orders and certain discharges. Neither check is a Vulnerable Sector Check or a fingerprint-based certified check. Before you buy, confirm with your employer or the requesting organization which check they need.
How much does it cost?
A Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC) or a Criminal Record Check (Level 1) is $45 CAD per check, plus applicable taxes. Taxes are calculated at checkout based on your province. The full total is shown before you pay.
What if I need a Vulnerable Sector Check?
We do not offer Vulnerable Sector Checks. If a position involves working or volunteering with children or vulnerable persons and you have been asked for a Vulnerable Sector Check, apply through your local police service.
Can I get a Level 2 check (CRJMC)?
Yes. The Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Check (CRJMC, Level 2) is our main check. It includes everything in a Level 1 check plus outstanding charges and warrants, judicial orders (such as peace bonds, probation and prohibition orders) and absolute and conditional discharges within their disclosure periods. It costs the same $45 plus applicable taxes.
Can I correct application information?
Yes, before payment you can review and edit your details. After payment, contact support with your application reference as soon as possible. Once an application has been submitted to the screening provider it may not be possible to change it.
Can I receive a refund?
If your application has not yet been submitted to our screening provider, you can request a full refund.
After submission, the fee is generally non-refundable, except where we cannot complete the check because of our error or a failure by the provider. The full details are in our Refund Policy.
Identity verification
What documents are required?
Identity verification steps are completed directly with our screening provider through their secure process. You may need a valid government-issued photo ID and a device with a camera.
We will never ask you to email, upload through our contact form, or otherwise send us copies of your ID.
How is my identity verified?
After payment, you are directed to complete identity verification using methods offered by our screening provider. Depending on the method, this can include confirming details you provided, checking a government-issued photo ID, or answering questions to confirm your identity. The exact steps are shown on screen when you reach them.
What if my verification fails?
If identity verification cannot be completed, your account will show the next available step, such as trying again or using a different verification method where offered.
If you still cannot complete verification, contact support with your application reference. Please do not send ID documents to us. See the Refund Policy for how unverified applications are handled.
Results
How long does processing take?
Our estimate is that many checks will be completed in about 15 minutes after your identity has been successfully verified.
Some checks take longer. Reasons include additional review by the screening provider, a possible match that cannot be confirmed by name and date of birth alone (which may require fingerprint verification), or delays at the provider or record sources. You can follow progress from your account at any time.
Will my employer accept the result?
It depends on the requesting organization. Each employer or organization decides which type of check it accepts and from which providers. Please confirm with them before you order. We cannot guarantee that any particular organization will accept the result.
How will I access my results?
Your result is available only through your secure account. We never send results by email. We email you a notification when your result is ready, and you sign in to view it.
How long is my check valid?
A criminal record check does not have a fixed expiry date. It reflects the records found on the date it was completed. Many organizations set their own rules on how recent a check must be, so ask the requesting organization what they accept.
Privacy and support
How is my information protected?
Your information is encrypted in transit and at rest, with additional field-level encryption for sensitive details. Staff access requires multi-factor authentication and is logged.
We collect only what is needed to process your check. We do not ask for your Social Insurance Number. Your result is never shared with an employer or any other organization unless you authorize it after viewing your result, or where disclosure is required by law.
How can I contact support?
Use our contact form and include your application reference if you have one. You will receive a ticket reference by email. Please do not include ID documents or results in your message.
