Editorial Standards & Fact-Checking
Our guides explain Ontario police record checks in plain language. People use them to make real decisions about jobs, volunteering and licensing, so we hold them to the standards below.
Who writes our guides
Guides are researched and written by the Ontario Criminal Record Check team, with AI-assisted drafting. Every figure and rule is checked against the official source before publication. When a named reviewer is appointed, their name and role will appear on each guide.
Sources we use
- Ontario legislation, especially the Police Record Checks Reform Act, 2015
- The Government of Ontario’s police record checks guidance
- Official pages of Ontario police services and the RCMP for fees, processing times and application steps
- Official regulators and licensing bodies for profession-specific requirements
We open each source directly; we do not rely on search snippets or third-party summaries for figures.
How we handle numbers and dates
- Every fee, processing time and validity statement links to its official source and shows the date we checked it.
- We re-check figures at least every three months, and sooner when a source changes.
- If we cannot verify a figure, we leave it out.
- Our own turnaround figures are published only once they come from real order data.
What we will not publish
- Invented statistics, testimonials, reviews, ratings, credentials or accreditations.
- Claims that an employer, regulator or licensing body will accept a particular check or provider. The requesting organization decides.
- Claims that we offer Vulnerable Sector Checks or fingerprint-based checks.
- Anything suggesting we are a government department, police service or the RCMP, or are endorsed by one.
Independence and commercial disclosure
Ontario Criminal Record Check is a private business that sells Criminal Record and Judicial Matters Checks (CRJMC) and Criminal Record Checks (Level 1) online. Our guides also explain how to get checks directly from police services, including their fees, so you can choose the route that suits you. Our screening provider is Triton Canada.
Not legal advice
Our guides are general information. Requirements vary between organizations and change over time; confirm with the organization asking for your check.
Corrections
If you spot an error or an out-of-date figure, please tell us through the contact page or at info@ontariocriminalrecordcheck.ca. We review every report, correct confirmed errors promptly and update the guide’s “Updated” date.
